OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AT PHYSERGO MEDICAL CLINIC (SOUTH-WEST)
CLINIQUE MÉDICALE PHYSERGO DU SUD-OUEST

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DEPARTMENT WORK UNIT:
The work unit is an environment that provides evaluation, treatment,
information and prevention to people who have suffered an injury at work.
The functional capacities of injured persons, the capacity to perform
everyday tasks and work-related tasks are assessed and/or improved.
Because it offers a wide range of activities that are directly related
to the work environment, the work unit is an ideal setting
for treating people with work-related health problems.

Evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders through occupational therapy.

Our occupational therapists are members of a multidisciplinary committee recognized by the Société d’assurance-automobile du Québec (SAAQ)
for disorders associated with cervical sprains.

What does the evaluation consist of?

The evaluation as a whole involves two phases. The first phase is done
at the clinic with an occupational therapist, who evaluates the physical and mental functions necessary for driving a vehicle. The second phase consists of a test on the road with an occupational therapist and
an instructor from a recognized driving school. The vehicle has
all the various customized features to meet individual needs.

Who can benefit from an evaluation of their driving capacity?
Any person, 16 and over, who has never driven a vehicle and who has
a functional problem. Persons who have suffered from the alteration
of their physical or mental condition as a result of an accident or illness.

 Who can apply for evaluation?
Yourself, your doctor, your occupational therapist, your physiotherapist, your psychologist or any other health care worker in the network,
as well as suppliers of specialized adaptation equipment
and rehabilitation consultants (SAAQ, CSST).

How can you benefit from this program?
Fill out an application form, available at the reception desk of the clinic or on this site, in PDF format (you will need Acrobat Reader).

The objective of the functional capacity evaluation for work is to assess the physical capacities related to the performance of work and to the physical requirements of work-related tasks. This evaluation makes it possible to determine the level of physical capacity and provides objective information that is then used to determine the terms for a durable and safe reintegration to the work environment.

Various factors must be considered to assess the approach used as
a basis for the evaluation of functional capacities. Reliability, validity, objectivity, standardization, content and clinical application are the essential criteria of an accurate evaluation of functional capacities. Physergo uses the "Physical Work Performance Evaluation" (PWPE). This reliable, valid tool provides data to support recommendations for
an appropriate work reintegration program. This standardized test focuses
on the physical parameters that enable the measurement of functional capacities according to the work tasks. It consists of 36 tasks broken down into 7 categories, as follows: dynamic strength, tolerance to positions, mobility, balance, coordination, endurance and fine motor skills.

The PWPE measures the level of participation or cooperation of
the client. The participation of the client is evaluated for each task
of the test by comparing the measurements of the maximum effort, posture, quality of movement, heart rate, time, distance and number of repetitions, as well as the willingness of the client to increase the weights handled and maintain a position or repeat the movements.

The objective measurement and clinical assessment by
the occupational therapist determines the maximum safe physical capacities according to a person's level of work. The rating and algorithm system makes it possible to calculate the capacities evaluated over an 8-hour day. The results of the PWPE are useful in determining the terms of reintegration into the work environment according to an appropriate level
of effort after a work-related injury or an extended period of disability. Furthermore, the information can be used to structure the clinical environment to promote an effective rehabilitation program when the time of reintegration into the work environment is not yet determined.

This analysis makes it possible to evaluate the requirements of tasks related to the person's work station. By evaluating the worker in relation
to his or her equipment in the work place, we can:

Make recommendations for simple modifications to the work station
in order to facilitate the appropriate reintegration into the work environment.

Determine the tasks related to frequent injuries and suggest corrective solutions.

We make static or dynamic orthopedic devices for upper limbs. The devices are custom-fitted according to the specific problem. The problems most often encountered for which we make orthopedic devices are:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, de Quervain tendonitis, tendonitis at the wrist
and epicondylitis (tennis elbow).

Training organization certified by the Ministère de l’Emploi et
de la Solidarité du Québec under the
Loi favorisant le développement
de la formation de la main-d’œuvre
(an act to promote the development of labor force training). This training has two distinct vocations, one being informative and the other preventive. The objectives of this training are
as follows:

  1. To educate participants regarding the principle of good posture

  2. To educate participants regarding the importance of proper adjustment for their comfort in the work place.

  3. To plan and organize work activities within a culture that values prevention.

  4. To enable participants to adjust certain elements of their work station to promote postural hygiene.

  5. To promote awareness and develop initiatives regarding the work environment.

We can visit you in your home to evaluate your level of autonomy as well as your needs as regards technical help. Furthermore, we can provide home treatment for clients who are physically unable to visit the clinic.

Scheduled programs of up to thirty visits for training of the non-dominant upper limb for daily tasks, leisure activities, work as well as writing and word processing.

Evaluation for application for a Disabled Parking Permit. Training in postural hygiene, biomechanics and ergonomic work methods.

The Biodex System 3 can be used for the evaluation of muscular strength as well as for muscular rehabilitation.

Evaluation of muscular strength:

This equipment lets us objectively measure the strength of specific muscle groups. Strength can be measured statically or dynamically.
The data obtained is processed by computer and a clear, complete report is generated. The use of the Biodex System 3 is particularly suited
within the framework of a program to evaluate the functional capacity
for work-related tasks.
